10 Grooming Tips for Men
Here at Clarins, we believe that maintaining a well-groomed appearance is all down to a few things done well, without spending hours in the bathroom or at the barbers.
The ClarinsMen’s Grooming Guide
- Lather Up From Head to Toe
Showering daily sounds like a fairly basic step, but don’t be tempted to skip it - staying groomed and looking polished won’t work if you’re not all that clean underneath. Treat your body and scalp to a shampoo and shower gel that works for your hair and skin type. Follow up with a moisturiser on any dry patches - elbows, knees and hands tend to be the major culprits.
How often: Daily - Cleanse Your Face
Get started on a proper skincare routine. A quick go with soap or shower gel might’ve cut it in your teens and twenties, but as your skin ages, you may start to see a few fine lines, dry patches, uneven tones and even loss of definition. As a good start for men’s skincare, we recommend using a facial scrub a few times a week, as well as cleansing and moisturising to keep skin in top condition.
How often: Daily - Don’t Skimp on the SPF
Protecting your skin from the sun isn’t all about the burn - sun damage is often the culprit for premature skin-aging. Stick to a facial SPF all year-round and top up regularly – don’t forget to protect your body as well. We also recommend that you seek out higher factors during the hotter months.
How often: Daily - Shaving Savvy
Unless you favour a beard, always shave your face in the direction of hair growth. Start by using warm water to soften hairs and open pores prior to shaving, then rinsing afterwards with cold water to remove any stray hairs or foaming gel. This step also minimises redness and helps to close pores afterwards.
How often: Daily, or as needed - Aftershave 101
Wherever you shave, irritation is almost inevitable. Cool down any red and angry skin afterwards with an aftershave lotion, which will keep the area soothed and moisturised. Avoid any rough towels, facial scrubs or heavily perfumed products for at least an hour or two after shaving - unless red is the look you’re aiming for!
How often: Daily, or as needed - Nailing It
Whether it’s the shoes on your feet or the state of your nails, details matter. We say maintain short, clean nails at all times by keeping nails trimmed (once a fortnight should do it, or once a week if your nails grow particularly fast). A nail brush is a quick and easy way to keep nails clean - just use as part of your daily shower routine.
How often: Daily, or as needed - Man-icure
On that note - even if you work with your hands, you don’t have to let it show. To minimise rough and dry patches on hands, keep calluses and sores at bay with a hand cream. A non-oily formula sinks into skin quickly and easily, so you can turn your hands to your day-to-day without work or workouts taking their toll.
How often: Daily - Best Foot Forward
Although they may only see the light of day during sunny spells or the occasional break, your feet are deserving of attention too. As with fingernails, keep toenails trimmed and clean at all times and invest in a pumice to give heels a good scrub every week or so. If they’re in need of a serious overhaul, don’t be afraid to go to the experts and get a pedicure.
How often: Weekly - Less is more
No matter how much you love the scent of your aftershave or cologne, less is always more - apply just a dab to the neck, wrists and behind the ears. If you prefer a stronger scent, we recommend choosing an eau de parfum over an eau de toilette, which tends to have a weaker fragrance concentration.
How often: Daily - Head First
Find a reputable barber and visit once a month to maintain any areas that need an expert eye - whether that’s trimming your hair, taking care of your eyebrows or shaping your beard. Getting in the habit of a regular visit will keep you looking polished all year round.
How often: Once a month
